El Campanar (The Bell Tower).

Is the main urban element of Verges. The Bell Tower has different functions: it is a metronome which marks the rhythm of the town’s life; it is also used as a lightning conductor which protects us from the storms; and it is an identity symbol.
It personifies the spirit of the people who live in Verges, always willing to take off to the sky, to grow, to go further. It was built in 1893 at the expense of Dr. Ramon Marquès i Matas, a renowned pharmacist and botanist, son of Verges, and who found fortune in Barcelona. The previous bell tower was in the highest part of the churches’ façade, as you will be able to see if you have your eyes trained in the art of reading stones.
